About a week ago I bought Revlon Haircolor, Custom Effects in a light
blond shade. I had mixed feelings with the results. I have black hair
(dyed), and should of known that trying to achieve blond lights on my
own was a stupid idea.
Although the results were not what I wanted, I still went ahead and
gave Revlon Custom Effects another try. This past month I have been
experimenting with different colored highlights and lowlights.
I grew sick of the dark, dark black color and wanted to add some wild and fun flair.
The picture in my mind was black hair with high and low lights of red,
purple, blond, and maybe a strand of blue here and there.
I found Revlon Haircolor Custom Effects at my local Rite Aide for only
$5.00, so I couldn't pass it up. For me, if it ends up looking like
hell, it's not a big deal. It's frigging hair... I could always re-dye
it, or wait for it to fade. I don't know why some broads make sure a big
deal of hair... unless you are bald, don't whine!
Anyhow, I purchased it in a color called Currant, which is numbered H40.
The Color:
According to my eyeballs I was about to go home and add in some deep
dark red colored highlights to my dark locks. Last week I added in some
blond locks that sort of came out, so I had to work around the blond
strands to make sure I didn't dye them a pink color by accident.
In The Box:
The kit basically includes your squeeze bottle, a powder to add to the
bottle, a brush that supposedly gives precise coloring to individual
strands, gloves, and a deep conditioner to use afterward.
The Brush:
Sucks! It is a very small plastic brush with a gap in the middle for
you to add the dye. However when you slide it down your hair, all of the
dye comes out in one clumped spot. Not good for precise coloring.
I ended up just using my bare fingers, which is a huge no-no....
However I found trying to add color to individual strands using the
gloves was close to impossible when it came to getting the dye where I
wanted it.
The Drip Free Formula:
Not quite. In fact the dye was quite runny, and if I was not working
patently and with precision it would of dripped and dyed my clothing,
skin, or table cloth. You really have to be careful with this one. It's
runny. If you are careful though you should be fine.
For me, I was adding dye to my finger tips, and simply sliding the dye
down the strand of hair I wanted to color. Once the strand was
saturated with color, I just slipped it back in place. What was good was
that it didn't cause other loose hairs to stick to it, which we all
know would result in an uneven highlight.
Results:
Once I had highlighted the areas of hair I wanted to add color to, I
let it sit for another half hour. I have dark hair, and I know from past
experience that you have to leave dye on a bit longer than the norm in
order to see a result.
After my time was up, I hopped into the shower, rinsed out the color
until the water ran clear, and then I added the conditioner (which
smells awesome by the way), and let it sit for 4 to 5 minutes.
My hair was left pretty silky after getting out of the shower, but
once it began to air dry it felt dry. I added some leave in conditioner
to take care of that parched feeling.
I was expecting minimal results. The last time I used Custom Effects I
got bare minimal results, so I expected the same from Currant.
As I began to straighten my hair though I noticed a nice dark burgundy
wine red color mixed within my black and blond strands. It was exactly
the results I wanted. The strands I had placed dye on were fully
colored, with no chunked blocks of red and black mixing. The color on
the box was basically the color I was now seeing in my hair.
Overall:
Revlon Haircolor, Custom Effects, Currant H40 works really well.
Although other Custom Effects suck; I must say this particular color
worked like a charm. I had the color I wanted, and the look I was going
for. Now all I need to do is get some more blond in there, with some
blue, and my overall look shall be achieved. Then I'll dye it another color. Haha.
You can pick up a box of Custom Effects at any local drug store
