In November buzz starts flying through the office where I work about
December's office holiday party. Some bail with excuses, but others look
forward to mingling outside of the office. Mostly to impress
co-workers, and of course the boss.
However, that small knot in your stomach forms because you want to
impress without going overboard or looking sleazy, or too sexy.
So what should one wear to the work holiday party? What is acceptable, and what is a no-no?
Colors for one should remain neutral, but with a little flair. You
cannot go wrong with a black dress, but remember- you do not want to be
the talk around the water cooler the next morning for wearing a 'little
black dress'.
You want to wear a black dress that has some flair to it, some room
and some comfort. Steer clear of body tight dresses. Boobs don't belong
flopping around in the office, and just because you are not at work,
does not mean its okay to set them free.
Keep the material loose and comfortable, but not too loose as to where things look sloppy.
When it comes to a black dress you can choose one with a small amount
of sewn in rhinestones for flair, or you can simply accessories with a
pretty pin. Pins can be added to the area in between the breast, or to
the side to keep things simple, yet elegant. Pins, believe it or not can
really make a dress, a 'dress'. A perfect example is the dress found here.
The best advice when it comes to black dresses is to keep them at
around knee length, anything above will make you look trampy, and unless
that is the kind of promotion you are looking for- avoid it!
Another color that is flattering for work holiday parties are maroons
and moss greens. You can find nice velvet maroon dresses, or green ones
that represent the holiday Christmas colors. These dresses are usually
found everywhere during the holiday months. They are flattering, as well
as warm, and not too revealing. Red velvet is also a nice bold holiday
color...if red is your color that is. A nice example is found here.
Although this red velvet dress is gorgeous, remember that going overboard will only cause people to stare.
If dresses are not your thing, then don't worry, there is no rule or
law saying that you have to dress yourself up in a gaudy uncomfortable
dress to your holiday party. You can look festive in black slacks and a
bold colorful sweater as well.
Here is a nice sophisticated idea for those who don't like showing leg
at all. Do avoid holiday themed grandma sweaters though. The wide leg
pants shown here are perfect for such an occasion.
If you are going to wear black slacks though, definitely wear a
colored sweater, or a colored pea coat. If you pair black pants with a
black shirt you will just fade out, allowing others to stick out.
Just remember to keep things pretty, slightly sexy, but not overboard
in the sex pot department. The key is to look fantastic without over
doing it..
One rule of thumb is to remember to arrive wearing a nice coat. I
cannot even count how many women, and men alike came to last years
Christmas party wearing lovely outfits, yet walked it with really shabby
ugly winter coats.
