Creative Do-It-Yourself Holiday Updos

The updo is a classic hair style that I do not think will ever go away. Many hair trends have come and gone, but the updo managed to stick around for years and years, and that is because it gives a woman a sexy edge, with a sophisticated elegant touch.

However updos can sometimes be boring. I mean think about your company Christmas party last year, how many women came in wearing the updo? In a crowd where nearly 80% of women wearing updos, the look can get bland, and boring quickly.

I'm an edgy woman myself, I like looking sophisticated, but I still have a very fun and flirty flair about me that must shine through when tossed into a room of a hundred other women who have the same hairstyle as me.

With a simple updo I can create myself by adding fun holiday accessories. Instead of adding a simple hair clip, I will add hair clips that are associated with the holiday. A wreath, a Christmas tree, or blinking battery operated lights. Yes, I'm all for the blinking holiday lights- although they may not be for everyone.

The battery operated mini lights can be found just about anywhere during the holiday season, and you can simply tuck the battery box into your bra running down your back. You can turn them on and off with a click of a switch. You can run the strand of lights through your updo, or through a braided updo for a really unique holiday look.

You can also add very tiny bells into your hair. I use mini craft bells, and when my hair is up, I will actually sew the bells into my hair (not the scalp!) for a firm tight grip.

Sewing individual bells into my hair gives an illusion as if they are floating. This always looks really neat, especially if you add a few to the very back of your updo. I really like the bells because they are creative, no one else will have them, and they are not tacky. You can even sew in green and red bells for Christmas parties.

You have to be especially careful because you could snag your hair and ruin the updo, so take time to practice before pulling your hair into an updo.

For those of you who don't dig jingling all night you can create a very elegant, sophisticated flair to your updo by buying swarovski teardrop crystals.

These special crystals have holes located at the top of the teardrop, drilled in sideways. You can sew them into hair as you would the bells, only the swarovski teardrops will shine much nicer, without being 'childish'. The teardrops can be added just about anywhere, and they look stunning. Make sure though that the holes are on the side, so they hang properly - like frozen rain drops. Like these.
