I have used many all natural soaps, and have found out that since using
my first all natural bar, that they tend to work and smell a hell of a
lot better than most drug store or super store soaps. It was only 'natural' that I give an all natural shampoo a try.
Burt's Bee's Super Shiny Grapefruit & Sugar Beet Shampoo was the
first and probably the last all natural shampoo I will ever use.
The bottle itself promised that the oh so natural ingredients in the shampoo would make my hair super shiny, and super soft.
After reading the ingredients, I wondered where all the natural stuff
was. You see mama always taught me, if you can't pronounce it, than it
must not be natural.
Ingredients taken from the bottle read:
Water, decyl & lauryl glocosides (natural coconut, corn starch,
&sugar soap blend), coco-glucoside and glyceryl oleate (natural
sunflower & coconut oil soap blend), soy protein, coco betaine
(coconut oil moisturizer), honey, sucrose ester (natural sugar ester),
betaine (sugar beet), vegetable glycerin, hydroxypropyltrimonium
oligosaccharide (sugar moisturizer), glucose (sugar), grapefruit oil,
orange oil, lemon oil, tangerine oil, lime oil, ginger oil, petitgrain
oil, xanthan gum (natural thickener), glucose oxidase &
lactoperoxidase (natural preservative).
They threw in the actual name of the odd ingredients, so I guess it
must be real? Whatever, I was trying it either way. I had used poison
ivy soap from Burt's Bee's before with excellent results, so I assumed I
would be getting excellent results with their shampoo.
Packaging:
The bottle is... how can I put this? Well...it's sort of ugly, and not
very appealing to the woman's eye. The yellowish colored shampoo comes
packaged in a plastic see through bottle, with a cheap sticker slapped
on it with the name of the product Super Shiny Grapefruit & Sugar
Beet Shampoo. There is a hand drawn picture of a grapefruit and a
beet...although the beet looks more like a carrot to me.
Scent:
I popped the top in the store to get a quick sniff. It was citrusy,
and reminded me more of oranges than it did grapefruit. Either way
though, the scent was pleasant and uplifting, and I had no issues with
it.
Use:
If you need me to tell you how to apply shampoo, I would be worried.
But in case you have lived in a cave for your whole life, or perhaps you
just came up from your bomb shelter... you apply this after rinsing
your hair with warm water. You then squeeze about a handful of the
shampoo into your palm and insert into hair. Rub a dub it all around
until you get a lather. Lahdee dahhh deee dooo... then rinse! Got it?!
Good!
My use:
I did the above... the scent filled the room and was nice...although I
prefer my bodycolody shampoos and temptations over this citrus scent,
it was still nice.
The lather worked up easily, and the shampoo itself is very thick.
Usually thick shampoo formulas mean I will end up with thick puffy hair,
so I wasn't too thrilled seeing how I already have thick unruly hair.
Results:
After getting out and drying off, the citrus scent stood with me for a
few hours, but my hair... well my hair was left a wild frizzy out of
control mess. I could not detect any new keen shine, and softness...
hah! If you consider tangles, knots, and fly aways soft... then yeah I
had soft hair. Unmanageable, but soft.
It seems to me that this shampoo is designed with those with thin
straight hair in mind. For those of you with wavy thick hair, I would
avoid this oh so natural shampoo at all costs. But seeing how it does
not even add any 'shine' I can't see why anyone would want to buy it.
It's a waste of $8.00.
Pricing and availability:
I found my hunka hunka volume shampoo at Target. It was $7.99 for the 12 ounce bottle. You can also check it out at www.burtsbees.com.
Recommendation:
If you buy this, or have already bought it; tried it, and hated it... I
recommend filling the missing shampoo up with water and returning it
for your money back. Hehe.
If you have yet to buy it... don't. It's as simple as that. It's expensive and does nothing but make your hair feel fluffy. If you like fluffy hair, then go for it!
