L'Oreal Preference 5MM Medium Mahogany Brown Hair Color

I dye my hair quite often; probably too often. I can't help it though, I get bored of the same color quickly, and nothing fixes my bored buzz quite like dyeing my hair a different color.

This past year I've experienced dying my hair black, added red lights, then blond lights... you name it, likely my hair has been that color.

Personally though, I have tried to steer clear of reddish base colors, because I had a very bad dye job with a red color as a teen that turned my entire hair color Ronald McDonald red. However I have had a lot of excellent and beautiful results with L'Oreal hair dyes this past year, so I figured I'd stay loyal to this name brand so long as the results were as promised.

I came across L'Oreal Preference 5MM Medium Mahogany Brown Hair Color at Target this past weekend, and it seemed to be a really nice color. A dark brown with very subtle mahogany lighting throughout.

My hair is a very dark brown, and according to the boxes back label, using L'Oreal Preference 5MM Medium Mahogany Brown Hair Color on dark hair would give dark reddish results. Thats basically the result I was after.

In The Box:

Inside of the box of L'Oreal Preference 5MM Medium Mahogany Brown Hair Color, you have your tube of no mess fade resisting coloring gel, an application bottle slightly filled with color optimizing creme, and of course a small tube of after coloring conditioner. Inside of the box you also have a pair of gloves, and of course your instructions (that are getting harder and harder to find the frigging ENGLISH version!

The tubes are all labeled 1, 2, or 3. It makes it easy for those who don't read directions (like myself).

Set Up:

Setting everything up is pretty self explanatory, but for those who have never dyed their hair should read the included instructions. Basically though you simply pour the coloring gel labeled 1, into the optimizing creme, labeled 2.

After you pour the contents together you then mix, and shake the hell out of the contents until they are well blended. I usually shake it around for about a minute to make sure both liquids are blended and mixed in together completely. Not mixing all the way through could lead to patchy spots in your hair color.

Next you simply squeeze the gel into your glove and add to hair, or you can add directly to hair. The way you apply the color is really up to you.

Next you let the dye sit for about 20 minutes. I personally though let it sit for 30 minutes because my hair is darker towards the bottom and lighter at the top, so I wanted full saturation on the bottom half of my hair. Darker colored hair is harder to dye, and could even take a few tries before it's right.

I also place a plastic shopping bag over my head and tie it up for better results. I think all dye kits should come with a plastic head piece, but they don't. I recommend you tie a bag around your head when finished. This warms up the hair allowing it to dye it more efficiently, and it also keeps dyed hair from touching other surfaces and staining them.

After waiting for 30 minutes, I then took to the shower to rinse the color from my hair. Make sure the water runs clear before adding the included conditioner.

Results:

This is the first time my hair color results were exactly what I saw on the box. Usually the color you see on the box is never the color that you get on your actual hair. It's usually a shade or two darker or lighter.

With L'Oreal Preference 5MM Medium Mahogany Brown Hair Color though what I saw is what I go. A full head of luscious Medium Mahogany Brown hair, only it was the color that the box showed as results for darker hair! To say I was impressed would be an understatement, because I was thrilled!

The overall results on dark hair is gorgeous. It left my hair a beautiful chestnut dark brown with a shimmery cherry wood colored shine.

Once again, I will stay a customer of L'Oreal dyes because they never streak, leave spots, splotches, or give me bad color. I have always been satisfied with, L'oreal when it comes to hair dye, and I will continue using it simply because of this. Most of all though my hair feels and looks healthier after using the color treatment. Not too many dyes actually improve hair after using them. If anything they make hair brittle. L'Oreal? No, I've never had that problem, this is why I am able to dye it so often.

Overall:

Fabulous! L'Oreal Preference 5MM Medium Mahogany Brown Hair Color left me with wonderful fall colored hair, a subtle reddish shimmer that is not coppery or ugly. The dark brown with the red lights are simply superb.

The results will be lighter on light hair, check the bottom of the box for different color results on different shades of hair.
