I absolutely positively hate my hair. I hate it when it is in it's
natural state, that is. My hair is pretty indescribable. It is extremely
thick, I'm talking a freaking 5 foot wingspan of puff on either side if
I allow it to air dry naturally; and blow drying my hair type...forget
about it!
Put a blow dryer up to this type of hair, and it ends up looking even
puffier, frizzier, burnt, and all bent out of shape. I wish I had the
type of hair that some girls have; you know, a little wavy, but nothing a
quick spritz of a blow dryer can't flatten out.
For those with thick unruly hair like mine, we are left with so few
options. However the best thing about having hair like mine, is that
when I straighten it, it looks full, shiny, and I get complimented all
of the time. 'Oh I wish I had hair like yours!'
Well only if they knew what it takes to achieve straight hair like this, they wouldn't be so quick to place such a wish.
Yes it does look gorgeous, it's not lifeless, not dull, and it has
bounce. However to achieve this bounce, you're hair has to be thick to
begin with... so all you other thin haired chicks, yah may as well stop
reading now.
I won't lie to you and say these tips are quick and easy, because if
you have hair like this, you know that NOTHING is quick and easy!
First and foremost, you are going to need a straight iron. A chi works
wonders, but I use a 5 star Hollywood brand iron, and I love it. As far
as the iron goes though, you do not want to get a big square shaped
one. They are far too difficult to get to the roots, so go with a nice
thin straight iron. You are going to want to make sure it has infrared
technology though, because using infrared technology ensures your hair
does not burn, or look dull over time.
So now that you have your straight iron (and ladies make positive note
tat you DO NOT use any iron that requires you to add water, this only
makes your locks frizzier), you are now going to need a glosser. However
if you have greasy locks by nature, you can skip out on the glosser.
Before just working on your hair with your iron though, you need to
shower first. I recommend showering with moisturizing shampoo, and
moisturizing conditioner. Pantene ProV, or Neutrogena Moisturizing
products work best. This ensures that when you get to using the iron,
your hair will be extremely soft and silky when complete.
So take your shower... go on, scrubba dubba dub away in the tub.
Now, spritz about 2 shots of the glosser into your wet hair. If you
put the glosser in while your hair is dry it tend to give it a fake
greasy look, so put it in while it is still wet. Do not use a lot
though, like I said, 2 squirts is all you will need. My hair is very,
very thick, and 2 has always been the max even in my thick hair.
Next you will want to towel dry your hair. After towel drying you will
then need to blow dry your hair. I know that blow dryers are a major no
no for those with thick frizzy hair, but trust me, it makes
straightening the hair go by so much faster.
Once your hair is dry, or at least 80-90% dry you can now rev up the straightening iron.
I always place the heat at the highest maximum temperature, so go
ahead and do that, don't be scared, it will not fry your hair!
One the iron has heated up, you are now going to work at straightening
it out in sections. Depending on how thick your hair is, and how long
it is, it will take anywhere from 1 hour, to 1 1/2 hours to have it
fully straightened out.
You will want to take extra special care at the roots. You want to get
as close to the scalp as possible without burning yourself.
Although it may take a bit of time, the longer you work at it, the straighter it will get.
After your hair is straightened out, you may want to use a de-frizzing
serum (I use one by John Frieda that works great). Using the de-frizzer
will keep your hair style straight even in extreme moist weather
conditions.
My straightened hair will sometimes frizz or curl up in moist or humid
weather. I find though that by using a de-frizzing serum, my hair stays
sleek, shiny, and frizz free.
